Ofgem targets speculative data centres to unlock grid capacity

Ofgem moves to clear the grid connections queue.
New proposals aim to penalise speculative data centre projects that tie up vital capacity.
Ofgem’s proposed plans, launched for consultation today (29 July), would include the introduction of a refundable Data Centre Commitment Fee, paid by large data centre projects when they accept a connection offer.
Where speculative projects take up space in the queue, they can delay other schemes and create uncertainty about future network needs.”
