Senator James Paterson has suggested the Coalition would be open to working with One Nation to pass a proposal to block citizens associated with terror groups from entering the country.
Under One Nation’s first legislative proposal, the minister would be granted powers to refuse or cancel the passport of a person subject to an exclusion order or charged with, or convicted of, a terrorism offence.
Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke has rubbished the idea, arguing it “would last about 30 seconds in the High Court”.
Asked about Pauline Hanson’s appeal for the opposition parties to work together to pass a draft bill when parliament returns in August, Senator Paterson said: “We are willing to work with anyone who wants to protect Australia.”
Paterson said the proposed legislation should be introduced and referred to a Senate committee so that it can be properly examined.
