The Yindjibarndi people of WA’s Pilbara region have decided to officially appeal a decision by the federal court to award the group a landmark figure of more than $150 million in their legal battle with iron ore giant Fortescue.
The decision was made at a meeting in Roebourne, to which all Yindjibarndi native title body members were invited.
A vote was then taken, with all members attending, in person and online, voting in favour of an appeal.
Yindjibarndi Ngurra Aboriginal Corporation chief executive Michael Woodley said the decision to appeal was arrived at after robust discussions, where all views were respected, listened to and addressed.
“It was a long, emotional day, which resulted in a decision by all attendees to put family and Ngurra (Country) first,” he said.
