The smallest chick in a popular livestreamed osprey nest died Sunday, marking the first chick loss in the 10-year history of the livestreamed nest maintained by custodian Kent Roorda. Three chicks hatched in the nest in mid-June in a nest on Shadow Mountain Lake. Roorda, who shares the nest through a livestream with supporters known as the “Osprey Watchers,” announced the death in an email to patrons on Monday. Roorda said he has watched the nest produce three eggs many times over the past 10 years, but the smallest chicks always survived despite the competition. Roorda also sent an image (above) of the osprey nest following the chick’s death: two chicks, a parent, a nest full of feathers, but the body of the runt appears to be missing.
