The Washington Department of Ecology told water conservancy boards that it will require geologists to approve work previously done by engineers. The policy changes longstanding practice and could increase costs for farmers seeking to amend a water right. Ecology informed water conservancy boards of the new policy in an email July 8. Grant County Water Conservancy Board member Ken Enns said Ecology raised concerns about a routine change to the point of withdrawal of an existing water right. “What it will do is raise questions about all the work performed by engineers since 2000,” Reierson said.
