According to Rippey, Harris told her, "I wouldn’t say anything right now, Ruby. When Rippey later asked a Newsom adviser whether the governor "tells the truth" in the book, she said the adviser replied, "Well, we all remember things differently, don’t we, Ruby?" The scandal broke after Rippey sent an email confession to her husband while he was still working for Newsom.
