Guterres did not announce a date, saying the informal 5+1 meeting would require “adequate preparation,” including progress on confidence-building measures between the two communities. “I have the consensus of both sides and the guarantors to move into a 5-plus-1 meeting, but with adequate preparation,” Guterres said following separate and joint meetings with Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman. Guterres said he wanted tangible progress before convening the meeting because he did not want to hold further 5+1 gatherings “without results.” Erhürman, who was elected Turkish Cypriot leader in October 2025, told Guterres that he supported the UN chief’s efforts, according to local media. The self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, established in 1983, is recognized only by Turkey.
