Senators introduce SAFE Act to target chameleon carriers

Todd Young and Andy Kim introduced the SAFE Act on July 28, a Senate companion to a House bill targeting chameleon carriers.
The legislation directs FMCSA to study chameleon carriers and develop an automated tool to detect registration applications from carriers evading oversight.
The House bill has 19 co-sponsors and remains before the Subcommittee on Highways and Transit after its Feb. 13 referral.
and Andy Kim (D-N.J.) have introduced legislation to crack down on chameleon carriers, mirroring a House bill that continues to attract additional co-sponsors.
“In recent years, we’ve seen chameleon carriers become a major issue on Indiana’s roads, putting Hoosiers at risk and punishing law-abiding truckers,” Young said.
