Machines: A History of Electronic Music features contributions from Vince Clarke, Gary Numan and moreJean-Michel Jarre has written a book, Machines: A History of Electronic Music, which explores the history of electronic music via the machines that artists use to make said music.
Within the book, Jarre explores his own vast archive of synths and other electronic and electroacoustic music machines.
He also looks at the work of institutions such as Westdeutscher Rundfunk, Radio France and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop in the development of electronic music.
In addition to Jarre’s own words, Machines: A History of Electronic Music features contributions from Erasure’s Vince Clarke; Gary Numan; Richie Hawtin; New Order’s Gillian Gilbert; Johnny Marr; Nicolas Godin of Air; and Duran Duran’s Nick Rhodes; among others.
Thames & Hudson will publish Machines: A History of Electronic Music on 24 November 2026.
