In a 1963 radio interview with Studs Terkel, Bob Dylan was asked about the meaning of “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall.” Terkel assumed the “hard rain” meant atomic fallout, a natural reading for a country under the shadow of the bomb. But the Holy Father is posing a different question: Are we willing to live it out, impractical as it looks? Many would argue that few have embodied that willingness better than Dorothy Day, whom Pope Leo also invokes in his foreword. Pope Leo describes what living that claim looks like: “small daily gestures: the gift of a smile, an injury pardoned, a kind word.”
