In a questions-to-Cabinet members section of the meeting, road safety matters were raised by Coun Dave Mendes da Costa, who said residents across his Wainhouse ward regularly raised road safety concerns with him including about speeding around Savile Moor, roads used as “rat runs” and even difficulty crossing the main Burnley Road safely. “Against that backdrop, the administration has said it wants Calderdale to be more ‘car friendly’ while also making ‘Safer Streets’ one of its priorities. Responding, Cabinet member for Highways and Transport, Coun Darren Commons said the council was “absolutely committed to Safer Streets, we are doing this.” Coun Commons (Reform UK, Brighouse) alleged “the administration inherited a tragic state of affairs on road safety from the opposition.” Where complaints about road safety were made the council were undertaking, and would look at, traffic calming measures if they were required, he said.
