The Environment Agency (EA) confirmed the move as hot and dry weather continues to affect large parts of the country.
Seven regions across central, eastern and southern England are now officially in drought, with the effects already visible on the environment and daily life.
In July, rainfall in England was just seven per cent of expected levels, dropping to one per cent in the south.
The EA reports low river flows, early crop harvesting and a high risk of wildfires as immediate impacts of the drought.
In Wales, Natural Resources Wales confirmed that north Wales and the Upper Severn river basin entered drought conditions last week.
