While the finished sculpture appears effortless to visitors, Brooke said creating the Butter Cow requires careful engineering and precise temperature control. The renovation includes new windows, updated entrances, expanded workspaces, improved refrigeration and freezer storage, upgraded kitchen facilities, and a more centralized location for the Butter Cow display. The Butter Cow has been an Ohio State Fair tradition for more than a century. According to the Ohio State Fair, the first butter cow-and-calf sculptures debuted in 1903 during a butter sculpting contest sponsored by The Ohio State University and the Dairy Processors of Ohio. Since the Dairy Building opened in 1925, new Butter Cow sculptures have been created annually alongside a themed companion sculpture reflecting Ohio culture and current events.
