A dedicated group of campaigners initiated their mission to change plastic use in the town back in 2018, following Letchworth's successful attainment of the same status. Under the guidance of community lead Anni Sander, they registered with the SAS Plastic Free Communities movement and implemented a comprehensive five-point plan. This plan aimed to establish a community-led steering group, introduce the SAS Plastic Free Schools education programme, secure local council commitment, and collaborate with businesses and organisations to promote the reduction of disposable plastics. Fifteen local businesses joined the scheme and reduced their reliance on single-use plastic. In addition, over 30 schools, community groups, and local organisations, including the leisure centre, library, and town hall, signed up to become Plastic Free Allies.
