U.S. Sen. Ashley Moody, R-Fla., introduced federal legislation last week aimed at cracking down on staged automobile accidents that target commercial motor vehicles. The legislation acts as a companion bill to House Resolution 2662, which was introduced by Reps. Mike Collins, R-Ga., and Brandon Gill, R-Texas. Staged crashes, frequently called “crash-for-cash” schemes, happen when drivers intentionally cause minor collisions with large trucks so they can file inflated or fraudulent bodily injury and insurance claims. “With over 450,000 trucking jobs in Florida, it is safe to say that truck drivers keep the economy moving,” Moody said. Anyone who stages or helps stage an accident with a commercial motor vehicle endangers people’s lives and livelihoods.
