Drivers faced major delays across Kendal after a section of Appleby Road, near Gavel Court, was shut for two days because part of the road had sunk.
A Westmorland and Furness Council spokesman said: "Our team excavated a trial hole, onto the worst area of settlement, and determined that there was no imminent danger of collapse.
"We are in contact with United Utilities, and it looks like they are going to arrange for a comprehensive survey of their assets in the area.

“Now the road has reopened, we will continue to work with the council to investigate the cause of the issue.”
