The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has re-rated both the maternity departments at the Princess Royal Hospital, in Haywards Heath, and St Richard’s Hospital, in Chichester. However, the report noted several positive steps which the CQC said "reflected the dedication and compassion shown by staff every day". The University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation, which runs both hospitals, must now provide the CQC with an action plan outlining how it will address the issues identified. The rating comes amid a national investigation into some of England’s worst NHS maternity services, in which the Sussex trust was identified. Chief executive of the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Dr Andy Heep apologised to the impacted families and said the findings make that “we must do better”.
