The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has proposed waiving environmental laws and regulations to help companies like SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Amazon launch rockets and satellites into space at a faster clip. US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy pitched the idea as a way to keep up with the demand for rocket launches. Commercial rocket launches require going through the FAA to secure a license. In response, the FAA is introducing a proposed rulemaking to “waive requirements from 13 federal laws” for commercial space licenses, including operating a launch site, experimental permits, and rocket re-entry. Last year, the commission began moving to exclude satellite activities from the National Environmental Protection Act, sparking pushback from environmental and astronomy groups.
