A company and its 55-year-old director have been summoned to appear in court following an alleged sale of counterfeit garments marketed under the protected Presidential Shirts trademark commonly known as the popular Madiba shirts.
Spokesperson for the Hawks, Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana, says the summonses were served on Tuesday.
He says the investigation began after the registered trademark proprietor detected that garments bearing its protected brand identity were allegedly being sold at retail outlets in KuGompo City and in Mthatha.
The Hawks' Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit in KuGompo served the summonses on 28 July.
Mhlakuvana said authorised representatives conducted controlled test purchases at identified retail outlets, during which they established that the garments were reproductions unlawfully manufactured.
