What's up with Copenhagen apartments' minuscule bathrooms?

Members onlyHave you ever wondered what’s up with those tiny bathrooms in old Copenhagen apartments?
Copenhagen is known for its københavnerbadeværelser (or "Copenhagen bathrooms”), where toilet, sink and shower are squeezed into a 1-2 square meter space.
You may therefore also have noticed that these tiny bathrooms are limited to Copenhagen’s old buildings: until the early 1900s, the average apartment in Copenhagen didn’t come with private bathrooms.
Many of these bath houses still exist, the most famous ones being Sjællandsgade Bad in Nørrebro and Sofiebadet in Christianshavn.
Today you will even find companies specialising in advising owners of these tiny bathrooms on how best to renovate them to better meet modern-day needs.
