The Supreme Court yesterday accepted the request made by the father of the pilot, who died in the Ahmedabad plane crash in June last year, for the final inquiry report by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau ("AAIB"), expected in October, be submitted in a sealed cover to the court. Senior Advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan, appearing for 91-year-old retired Air Force officer and father of deceased Air India pilot Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, urged before court that the report be filed in a sealed cover. Recently, the Director General, Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau ("AAIB") had filed a counter affidavit before the Supreme Court of India in the petitions seeking an independent, court-monitored investigation into the Air India plane crash at Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025 which claimed 260 lives. AAIB has told court that its investigation will be completed by 6 weeks, and its draft final report will be ready by October 2026. The ill-fated Dreamliner, operating as Air India Flight AI171 from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed shortly after takeoff on June 12, 2025, killing 229 passengers, 12 crew members, and 19 individuals on the ground.
