By Bobby FalatWahpeton, N.D. (Valley News Live) – The City of Wahpeton is urging residents to take precautions after a pool of mosquitoes tested positive for West Nile virus Tuesday. City officials say the mosquito most commonly responsible for transmitting the virus is the Culex tarsalis, which is most active from dusk through the early morning hours. The North Dakota Department of Health recommends the following steps to reduce your risk:Use insect repellent containing DEET. Eliminate standing water around your home, including buckets, flowerpots, old tires, wading pools and birdbaths. The city says it will not make major changes to its mosquito control operations, noting it already operates as if the virus is always present.
