Petersohn texted Thomas on July 27 to congratulate him on his verbal commitment to play Division II college football for the University of Sioux Falls next year.

As an eighth-grader, he injured his ankle, and the administrators were unsure if he’d ever play football again.
“I'm still going to go play football for four or five years, but it's not going to be like high school football,” Thomas said.
