At 72, I’ve discovered something new about myself: I hate gardening. It scares me a little to think that I no longer need to work, and terrifies me to think that I’m no longer capable of it. I can’t envision gardening ever being a hobby, let alone a passion, as I know it is for many other people. But it’s a dose of reality, a necessary grounding in an otherwise privileged life.
