CENTRE– The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents to remain alert as phone scammers use increasingly convincing tactics to steal money and personal information. According to the Sheriff’s Office, scammers may pretend to represent a bank, government agency, utility company, or delivery service. The Sheriff’s Office also reminds residents that caller ID information cannot always be trusted. Scammers can “spoof” phone numbers, making a call appear to come from a familiar business, government agency, or local telephone number. The Sheriff’s Office encourages anyone who believes they have been targeted by a scam to report the incident.
