Christopher Yates was under the influence of drugs and alcohol on the evening of October 5, 2025, when the baby was under his care. The injuries were discovered when the baby was admitted to hospital early the next morning, having by then suffered seizures. Yates was said to have drunk 11 cans of lager and taken a line of cocaine prior to the incident. He admitted shaking the child out of frustration. Yates, of Morris Road, Swalwell, Gateshead, admitted the offence when he appeared before Newcastle Crown Court, on November 5 last year.
