A widespread blackout that hit several parts of Ghana in the early hours of Wednesday, July 29, 2026, was caused by a power system disturbance on the National Interconnected Transmission System (NITS), the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has confirmed. In a statement issued on Wednesday , GRIDCo disclosed that the disturbance occurred at approximately 3:11 a.m., resulting in the simultaneous tripping of some generating plants across the national power system. “The Ghana Grid Company LTD. (GRIDCo) wishes to inform the general public that the National Interconnected Transmission System experienced power system disturbance at approximately 3:11 a.m. on Wednesday 29th July 2026,” the company stated. The transmission company explained that the incident led to an interruption in electricity supply, affecting customers across the country.
