The Newton Police Department issued a press release Wednesday about how seriously they investigate false emergency calls, which is known as “swatting”, after responding to an incident. Just after 7 a.m. on Wednesday, July 29th, Newton Police Chief Rob Burdess says officers received what they now believe was a “swatting” call. The Newton Police Chief says swatting puts residents, first responders, and the community at risk, and the investigation into who was responsible for Wednesday’s call is ongoing. He encourages anyone with information to contact the Newton Police Department. Swatting is a class D felony, punishable by up to five years in prison.
