The Malta Chamber of Commerce has challenged the Opposition to outline how it would reduce the country’s reliance on population growth and increase productivity, while warning that Malta’s current economic model had “reached its limits”. Addressing Opposition leader Alex Borg and PN shadow ministers Wednesday, chamber president William Spiteri Bailey said businesses wanted to hear “solutions, not criticism”. Malta should move from a volume-based to a value-based economy, said Spiteri Bailey, arguing that the country’s future depended on higher productivity and not continued population growth. They are all symptoms of the same economic model… Today it has reached its limits,” he said. Opposition leader Alex Borg met the Malta Chamber alongside shadow cabinet ministers.
