By Amos HarrisPresident Joseph Nyuma Boakai has officially launched the National Historical Recovery and Repatriation Initiative, a landmark program aimed at reclaiming Liberia’s documentary heritage, preserving the nation’s rich history, and strengthening national identity as the country looks toward its bicentennial. As part of the initiative, President Boakai announced comprehensive plans to modernize both the National Archives and the National Museum. The President further revealed that his administration will revive the National History Project originally recommended by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Held under the national theme, “Strengthening National Identity Through Liberian-Led Historical Narratives,” this year’s Independence Day celebration highlighted the importance of preserving Liberia’s legacy while fostering civic responsibility. President Boakai concluded that the National Historical Recovery and Repatriation Initiative will serve to promote reconciliation, strengthen national unity, preserve an authentic historical record, and ensure that future generations inherit a deeper appreciation of Liberia’s rich and complex history.
