The exceptionally rare 1811 Forster Ungeheuer Riesling from renowned Pfalz winery Weingut Bassermann-Jordan, is the only one of eight remaining bottles to be auctioned in the sale that runs from 24 July to 3 August. The bottle come direct from the winery’s historic cellar, where it has remained for more than 200 years. It has recently been recorked (April 2026), being preserved exclusively with wine from the same 1811 vintage, with no younger wine added. The 1811 vintage was, according to Catawiki, one of Europe’s most celebrated historic vintages – a famous ‘comet vintage’ which coincided with the appearance of the Flaugergues comet, following a string of bad vintages at the start of the 19th century.
