Student Strikers Stage Sit-In For EducationOn Wednesday 29th July, 250 of Dunedin’s students staged a sit-in at the University of Otago’s St David's complex in protest of the ongoing cuts to tertiary education. This action was the high point of the student strike for education. In the lead-up to the sit-in, 400 students from Otago University, Otago Polytech and Logan Park High School marched through the iconic campus to chants of “Austerity is class war!” (Photo/Supplied)The strike, which was organised by Education Action Group ‘26 (EAG26), centred on seven demands (four for government, and three for university management). In addition to (1) fee free education, students called on present and future governments for (2) funding above inflation, (3) a universal student allowance, and (4) independent student unions, via the repeal of voluntary student membership.
