“A parked car can become dangerously hot in a matter of minutes, even with a cracked window, leading to suffocating heat for a child or pet left alone,” Donnelly said in a statement.
National safety officials estimate an average of 37 children die each year in the United States from heatstroke after being left in vehicles.
More than half of those deaths involve a parent or caregiver who unintentionally forgot the child, according to the National Safety Council.
Zhang was arraigned July 25 in Nassau County District Court and is scheduled to return Aug. 6.
The Legal Aid Society of Nassau County represented Zhang at arraignment.
