Canadians spent $3.3 billion less on travel to the United States in 2025 than the previous year, increasingly choosing other international destinations following President Donald Trump’s return to office, according to government data released last week by Statistics Canada. The national statistics agency said Canadian spending on U.S. travel fell to $18.8 billion in 2025 from $22.1 billion in 2024, while spending on travel outside the United States rose by $3.6 billion to $22.8 billion. “Following the change in the U.S. administration in early 2025 and the implementation of America First policies, Canadian travel sentiment shifted abruptly,” the report said. Travel to the United States, meanwhile, continued to decline. Statistics Canada described the decline as the “deepest and most sustained on record,” noting that decreases exceeding 30% had previously occurred only after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
