Friends of the Cedar Island Lighthouse (FOTCIL) is marking a major milestone in the restoration of one of Long Island’s historic landmarks with the return of the Cedar Island Lighthouse’s original lantern, bringing the preservation effort one step closer to completion.
The lantern will then be restored before being reinstalled atop the lighthouse at Cedar Point in East Hampton.
“The return of the lantern (cupola) to Cedar Point Park for its final restoration and installation is an important milestone in the full exterior restoration of Cedar Island Lighthouse,” said Peter Van Scoyoc, former East Hampton Town supervisor and president of Friends of the Cedar Island Lighthouse.
Friends of the Cedar Island Lighthouse, a newly formed nonprofit organization, is working to transform the restored lighthouse into a public destination dedicated to history and education.
“We are very excited about the pending completion of the exterior of Cedar Island Lighthouse, but there is still much to be done,” Van Scoyoc said.
