So they veered away from Dead songs and decided to focus on material played by Dead frontman Jerry Garcia’s other long-running project, the Jerry Garcia Band, commonly known as the JGB. Newman and his pals called themselves Jerry’s Middle Finger — in tribute to the missing digit on Garcia’s right hand — and committed to their idea.
