CHICAGO — Following the closure of seven Save A Lot grocery stores on the South and West sides, rideshare platform Lyft and nonprofit United Way of Metro Chicago are partnering to provide transportation to older residents in need of food, Mayor Brandon Johnson announced Tuesday.
Lyft will fund roundtrip rides to grocery stores for older residents to “provide immediate support” to neighbors impacted by the Save A Lot grocery store closures, Johnson said at a press conference.
Seven Save A Lot grocery stores on the South and West sides closed abruptly Saturday after the discount grocery chain ended its agreement with store operator Yellow Banana.
A seventh Yellow Banana-operated Save A Lot grocery store opened in 2023 at the site of the former Whole Foods.
The stores closing are “disappointing,” but they do not change the city’s commitment to investing in permanent grocery stores in disinvested neighborhoods, Johnson said.
