Hidden waterways that once supplied water to royal palaces are to be uncovered in a new archaeology project exploring what lies beneath three of London’s Royal Parks. The Royal Parks charity has launched the Lost Waterways of the Royal Parks, a three-year project that will investigate forgotten conduits, wells, reservoirs and underground tunnels hidden beneath Richmond Park, Greenwich Park and Bushy Park. Archaeologists hope to map and document the surviving infrastructure, revealing a little-known part of the parks’ history that has remained hidden beneath the landscape. The Royal Parks, which manages London’s eight Royal Parks, has appointed archaeologist Andrew Mayfield to lead the project, overseeing archaeological research, community engagement and interpretation. Running until 2029, the Lost Waterways project will begin in Richmond Park before moving to Bushy Park and Greenwich Park.
