I also love the lens names themselves, because the names engraved on the front rings of the lenses we use every day have their own stories, their own logic, and in some cases their own poetry. A Planar lens is corrected for field curvature, producing a flat image plane. Other notable lens names from Voigtländer include Skopar, Nokton, Ultron, and Apo-Lanthar, all fine names in their own right. (The fourth is the Cooke triplet, which, frankly, is a wonderful exercise in lens design but a boring lens name.) The German names arrive first and dominate the early decades: Protar, Dagor, Planar, Tessar, Xenar, Symmar, Ernostar, Xenon, Sonnar, Angulon, Biogon, Xenotar, Distagon.
