Every weekday, tens of thousands of motorists speed along the Beetham Highway, glancing towards Beetham Gardens, a community whose name has become one of the most recognisable and often misunderstood in Trinidad and Tobago. Both derive their name from the former Beetham Estate, itself named after Sir Edward Betham Beetham, the last British-born Governor of Trinidad and Tobago, who served from 1955 to 1960. The settlement became known as Beetham Estate Gardens, reflecting its origins as part of the former Beetham Estate.
