City Council floated strategies for collecting funds from some of Northwestern’s commercial activities during its Monday night meeting.
The referendum’s text did not explicitly mention NU or Ryan Field, but the memo and materials submitted to Council by city staff explicitly took aim at NU’s tax-exempt status.
NU has already started annual payments to the city, supporting initiatives including downtown revitalization, financial aid for Evanston students attending NU and a Good Neighbor Fund.
He added that the city should be “smart” about challenging NU, citing the CBA as a result of successful negotiations.
