Globally, progress in HIV prevention and treatment has improved outcomes for millions of people. Since 2010, new HIV infections have declined by 42% and AIDS-related deaths have dropped by 57%. WHO has raised concerns that reductions in international donor funding disrupted HIV prevention programmes in several countries during 2025. One notable development is the introduction of the WHO-recommended long-acting HIV prevention medicine lenacapavir, which is being introduced in several countries and could transform HIV prevention efforts through twice-yearly injections. Maintaining progress against HIV, hepatitis and STIs will require sustained funding, equitable access to healthcare and continued focus on reaching vulnerable populations
