The Archbishop of Zambia's Catholic Archdiocese of Lusaka has declared that two breakaway groups presenting themselves as Catholic Religious Congregations have no ecclesiastical recognition and should not be regarded as Institutes of Consecrated Life or pious associations of the Catholic Church. He identified the groups as the "Minoresses of Divine Providence" and "a group of women calling themselves 'Sisters of Divine Providence,'" clarifying that neither has canonical recognition in the Catholic Church. Archbishop Banda explained that the Minoresses of Divine Providence emerged from the Sisters of Divine Providence, itself a breakaway group that separated from the Sisters of the Child Jesus (SCJ) of Kasama, a Congregation of Diocesan Right. According to Archbishop Banda, the events leading to the current situation date back to 2015, when 21 members of the Sisters of the Child Jesus left their Institute and established themselves in Lusaka. He said repeated efforts by the Congregation and the Bishop of Kasama to reconcile the sisters and facilitate their return to their religious community were unsuccessful.
