This therefore means that the design of temporary routes during roadworks should reflect this behaviour. Besides focusing on cycling, the policy also mandates that pedestrians and wheelchair users also be given priority space during roadworks. The new guidelines set out minimum widths for temporary footways, generally aiming for two metres wherever possible. Even newly established walking and cycling routes are protected for up to five years from utility and contractor-led roadworks.
