ABUJA, Nigeria – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday received former Sierra Leone President Ernest Bai Koroma at the State House, as the ex-leader returned to his country after receiving a pardon that ended treason proceedings linked to an alleged failed coup in 2024.
Okay News reports that Koroma had been living in Nigeria after travelling there on medical grounds shortly after he was detained and charged with treason in Sierra Leone.
The administration of President Julius Maada Bio, the current ECOWAS chairman, recently withdrew all criminal charges against Koroma under Section 45 of Sierra Leone’s Criminal Procedure Act, 2024.
With the charges officially dropped, he was legally free to return to Sierra Leone at any time.
His pardon and return have been welcomed by many Sierra Leoneans as an important step toward national reconciliation and political stability.
