The engagement is known as The Wagon Box Fight, or, as the Indians called it, They Surrounded the White Tents. In commemoration of the event, on August 2nd, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. Donovin Sprague, Miniconjou Lakota historian and author, will present a program at the Wagon Box Fight Site near Story. Sprague’s ancestors fought in the Fetterman Fight and the Wagon Box fight and many other famous battles. He said the Wagon Box Fight was a well-orchestrate campaign by the Sioux, Cheyenne and a few Arapahos. After Sprague’s talk, Kearny’s Frontier Regulars will a present demonstration of the weapons that were used in the Fetterman Fight and the Wagon Box Fight, and why the Wagon Box Fight turned out much differently for the soldiers than the Fetterman Fight did.
