The Environment Agency announced the drought status, covering seven areas of England including East Anglia, which covers Essex, as well as much of central, eastern and southern England. Helen Wakeham, director of water at the Environment Agency, said: "The hot and dry weather means we are currently using water faster than nature can replenish it. "A second consecutive summer drought is an exceptionally serious situation and one that will have long-lasting impacts on our environment, wildlife and the economy. The Environment Agency said almost a third of England is experiencing "prolonged dry status." Anglian Water's hosepipe ban covers parts of mid and north Essex while Affinity Water and Thames Water restrictions cover the Epping Forest district.
