One dead and another left with life-changing injuries after incident on rail tracks

British Transport Police, paramedics and the air ambulance were called to the line near Eaglescliffe at 10.16pm on Tuesday, July 28, following reports of two casualties on the tracks.
The North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) sent two double-crewed ambulances, a duty officer and a clinical team leader to the incident.
"Paramedics also attended, and sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene while another person was taken to hospital with life-changing injuries.
A spokesperson for North East Ambulance Service added: "We were called to an incident on the train line near Eaglescliffe station shortly before 10.20pm on July 28.
"Crews were then requested again to attend the scene at 00.43 (29/07/2026) to assist with evacuating passengers from a train.
