A Display Dedicated to the Iconic Burberry Trench CoatThe V&A’s Prince Consort Gallery hosts a free display on the history of the Burberry trench from 21st September, marking the brand’s 170th anniversary. The Burberry Trench: Crafting an Icon traces the coat back to Thomas Burberry’s 1879 invention of cotton gabardine, works through the details that define it (the storm flap, the House Check lining, the detachable throat latch), and closes with 19 runway looks spanning the past two and a half decades, including designs from former creative directors Daniel Lee and Christopher Bailey. Objects from Burberry’s archive are being shown publicly for the first time, among them early twentieth-century catalogues and a trench once worn by designer Hardy Amies. It’s a preview of sorts for a bigger project: Burberry and the V&A are working on a full Burberry Gallery, opening in 2028 as part of a wider redesign of the museum’s fashion spaces.
