In their 2015 book Why Greatness Cannot Be Planned, Joel Lehman and Kenneth Stanley (henceforth, L&S) spend the entire book showing why this plan is going to fail. In objective search, once you run it, and see if you make it to the objective, you’re done. L&S created minimal criteria novelty search, which is a form of novelty search where results must meet a set of rules. As they put it, “seeking consensus prevents traveling down interesting stepping stones because people don’t agree on what the most interesting stepping stones are.” Giving Up The GoalWhy Greatness Cannot Be Planned is a wonderfully broad book.
